New Project: Bathroom Gut Job Part 1 Update - Demo
/We have come to the end of the first week! And it was a doozy, but in the best way possible! In case you missed it, I am gutting our kids bathroom {see the before, the plan and mood board post here}.

I made my first boo boo right off the bat, so hopefully we got that out of the way {did I just jinx that?}. I was testing out how easy it would to be remove the tile in the shower and got into a groove so I kept going…without thinking about covering the tub that we are keeping. Low and behold, 1 {or 2} tiles fell before I could catch them and chipped the tub. On day 1! Actually day 0 because I hadn’t even officially started 🤦🏼♀️.
Anyway, let’s move on to the rest of demo. The shower consisted of a lot of 6x6 tiles that was also on the ceiling so it took some time to get them all off. But that was nothing compared to removing the hardie backer board underneath which were nailed in every 3 inches. After 5 lifetimes, we {had to call in Ron to help} got it all down and were able to see that we could do something we were hoping would work out! This multi-tool pry bar and nail puller pry bar were the MVP’s of shower demo.
The plan is to move the rain shower head back to a standard shower and our hope was that they had simply lowered the ceiling for the rain shower and we could raise it back up. That was exactly the case! We will need to raise the light, remove all the supports and do some patch work, but the shower will go up 8 more inches and the ceiling will be flush with the rest of the bathroom 🙌🏼. I am calling that a win as it will help the space feel bigger.
Next up came the floor. This came up so easily. With 12x12 tiles, I was able to get them up quickly and to my surprise, they only back buttered the tile before laying it. I’m not complaining because it left the hardie backer board in great condition and like it had just been laid. After a good cleaning, I will be able to reuse it. Another win!
The plan is to complete the floor first because we need a plumber to help move the shower and then we can raise the ceiling. I’m starting off with a dry layout of floor to make sure I have everything straight and can already make some cuts. My original plan was to use this hexagon tile, but remove some of the black diagonals and also create a black border around the perimeter. The more I thought about it, the more I realized this could be quite the challenge for my first time laying mosaics. Then I found this tile and fell in love. Still fits my goal of taking our bathroom back in time, but could be a little more easy.
The one thing Berkley asked for when she was browsing Pinterest with me for inspiration was a border around the perimeter. As I do the dry layout, I am going to attempt to see if that is still a possibility.
Stay tuned for the floor installation and more updates along the way!
