One Room Challenge - Primary Bedroom Cottage Makeover Week 2(3)
/It’s been a week filled with making a lot of progress while also feeling like not making any progress at all. Welcome to the official week 3 {my week 2} of the One Room Challenge where I am giving our primary bedroom a makeover.
In case you missed it, here is the design plan for this space. The goal is to create a cozy cottage bedroom retreat. With a small house and 3 kids, it is so important for me to have every space feel complete. Our bedroom has not felt that way for years. It’s time to change that.
If you are not familiar with the One Room Challenge, it is a bi-annual event where you can join in our transforming a room and then you share your progress weekly. This year, they are even including mini projects. Even If you aren’t ready for a full room makeover, there are a ton of mini projects happening…tons of inspiration! See it all here!
Last week, I finished all the walls, smoothing out the orange peel texture and painting them the same color they were before, SW Alabaster {my go to white}.
This week is all about completing a bunch of little tasks that don’t make a drastic change but are completely necessary and make the biggest difference for us living here.
Doors + Trim
First up is painting the doors and trim. The first thing we did when we moved into our house 7 years ago was paint everything white. I like white, it is neutral, it is easy, it works. But over the years, as I have really become in tune to my vibe, I realize I like warmth sprinkled in. I just have never known how to incorporate it. I am slowly figuring out what works and what doesn’t for me, and painting the doors and trim a warm neutral, non white, is definitely me.
After a few samples, I decided on SW Accessible Beige. It is a beautiful creamy beige and it pair well with the other colors I am using.
If you are in need of a good roller to give you a spray like finish, this foam roller is the best! After trying what feels like every single one, I recently found this one and will never use anything else. I use it on the doors, trim and baseboards. Of course pairing it with my favorite brush.
The doors and trim are now done and the walls are looking amazing! Now it’s time for some not so visible updates.

Fixing the Old
We live in 1929 home and with that comes 100 year old fixes. Although our bedroom was a later addition, it is still old. The attic access door and pocket door track to our bathroom are most likely the originals when they added the addition.
First on the list is to replace the attic access door. Not only is the ladder stabilization questionable, but the springs are so bent that it doesn’t fully close, leaving the clowns to watch us at night 🫣.
And now onto the pocket door track leading to our bathroom. It’s been 7 years of clunk clunk clunk when you close it and clunk clunk clunk when you open it. Plus, the hardware to be able to lock it was never installed. We are getting the old track out and the new track in! And finally making it so we can lock it!
Now that the not so fun stuff is out of the way, let’s get to some more drastic changes with the ceiling!
Updating the Ceiling
I think this is going to make a huge difference…while also making my husband a little nervous. I am adding tongue and groove to our ceiling in the color SW Dried Thyme (literally the perfect green). The ceiling is also an orange peel texture and it is very splotchy. Instead of just smoothing it out like the walls, I want to give it its own vibe.
After getting up a few boards, I already know I am obsessed. I can’t wait to finish it!
This week, I will continue to work on the ceiling. The plan is to have that done by next week 🤞🏼. Stay tuned! Anything on the ceiling always takes twice as long.
Follow along as I transform this space over the upcoming weeks. You can see all the participants posts here. Until next week, my friend. Make it a great one!
