In the middle of 2020, my husband and I built one of our biggest projects at the time. I didn’t record a lot of it because, quite frankly, I was scared. It’s taken me a long time to get to the point of being willing to try projects on my own and not scared to share it all. Although I was very much a part of this project, my husband did all the stuff I was scared to do, even though he had no idea what he was doing either. If you are interested in the playhouse design, we followed this build from The Handmade Home and then modified it to fit our space.

Anyway, you didn’t come here for any of that deep stuff, you came here to see how easy it is to make a mushroom table and chairs {ORRRRRRRRR the chairs could be used as an outdoor end table}. This project is the perfect DIY beginner friendly project that you can complete in a day.

Bases

The bases themselves are already a great color and I love the design on them, but I really want them to look like mushrooms, so I am giving some added texture to the base by blobbing {is that even a word?} some cream, light grey and white.

If you have bases that aren’t the color you want, start by priming them and then paint them the color you want. If you have something that is smooth, you could do a baking soda + paint mixture and it will give you some fun texture! Simply scoop out some paint, add a spoonful of baking soda, mix and paint. I like to do a 10-to-1 ratio with paint to baking soda, but it’s all preference.

Tops

You could easily cut out your own tops for the chairs and table, but I found these at Lowe’s and they are the perfect size. Simply prime them to get ready for paint!

For the table top, I have an old coffee table top that I made a few years ago, so I am repurposing that. I did this plaster of paris chipping technique for it so it is in need of a good sand and to refill all the gaps with wood filler. Lowe’s also has these in the perfect size for the table. If you buy two of them to make the table thicker, simply apply some adhesive in between them and then clamp them together until they dry an add a few screws to make it extra secure.

I like the chairs being thinner than the table top, but you could also double the chair seat to be the same thickness. The options are endless with this, you can make it your own!

Paint

My kids each wanted to choose their own seat color so I went with whatever they chose. One pink, one blue and one green. I know that technically a mushroom should be red, but red is my least favorite color 🙈. Plus since it is for the kids space, I want them to be a part of the decision making.

For the table top, I was set on using the same color that I did for all the stems in the wildflower mural, so green for that!

After two coats of paint, the fun part, the spots! I don’t want them to be perfect, so I am free-handing them for some extra character.

Secure + Seal

To secure the tops to the base, flip the table top upside down and trace the base in the center so you know where to place it. Add adhesive to the table top and to the bottom of the base.

Then flip it over and place on top of the down-facing table top. Because I know my kids and how they are when their friends come over, I’m also adding in some screws for some extra support.

The final step is to simply seal it all to help withstand being outside.

There you have it. A simple and somewhat can be budget friendly outdoor furniture DIY that you can complete in a weekend. The chair height would be perfect for an end table so if you aren’t in need of a kids table and chairs, make some end tables! I think I might make a couple extra

Aren’t these the cutest little things you ever did see? Not only are they adorable, but the kids love them. I wish I did these sooner! What do you think? Would you try this? If you do, send me a pic!

with love, andi
